Palms are the indoor trees of choice for global architects and interior designers, adding drama and theatre to corporate headquarters, shopping centres and office atriums worldwide. On gloomy days, glass-walled buildings can appear cold and hard instead of open and welcoming. Palms are the perfect feelgood plant for breaking the ice and adding morale-boosting warmth. And Phoenix Roebelenii is one of the best.
Phoenix Roebelenii
Phoenix Roebelenii is a palm tree of South East Asian origins. Its trunk is slender and straight, rising to a single bud – the hub for a dramatic canopy of long, bright-green pinnate (feather-like) leaves. Though otherwise known as the Pygmy Date Palm it is no bonsai, ranging from anywhere between 1.5 to 8 metres in height depending on your requirements. The Phoenix is truly a statement plant, creating strong vertical accents and inspirational skyline silhouettes.
A Regal Plant
Britain’s Royal Horticultural Society has officially recognised Phoenix Roebelenii’s powers of attraction, granting it an Award of Merit, in part for its “outstanding excellence for decorative use”. Its linear, symmetrical shapes and dynamic, shard-like leaf structure perfectly complement – and animate – modern building designs.
The Phoenix Palm indoors
Though most at home in the tropics, Phoenix Roebelenii is a hardy character and travels well. Like any plant, its DNA yearns for the outdoors and sunlight but this palm has adapted surprisingly well to life inside. They do require an expert touch, though. Watering needs to vary from plentiful to sparing depending on growth phases; the brighter the light they can get, the better; soil needs constant checking for signs of harmful waste salts and periodic leaching (a process by which salt build-ups are washed out of planter soil); and regular repotting can be involved.
